Heart & Soul of it all

garden20hands3.jpg
Last year I wrote about food banks in my article titled “The New Face of the American Recession.” I spoke about “share the love, share the food.” Well, I’ve changed that to; “Share Your Love, Share Your Food.” and the heart & soul of this is just that…share!

“Share Your Love, Share Your Food” made its unofficial debut May 18, 2013 at the Champion Center and we were honored to share the harvest with others!

The desire and the goal of this is to share with people not only fresh food but empower them with knowledge about that fresh food. You don’t have to be rich to eat well, you don’t have to be rich to share well. Everything begins with love. Without love, sharing is meaningless.

In 2010 we began this garden because I had stopped smoking and began researching information on becoming a vegetarian and eating organic foods. I WANTED to make a positive change in my body. TODAY I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER! In 2011 this garden became more than an adventure in learning and changing, it became a passion to reach out and help others make positive changes in their lives.

This simple little garden is The Dirt Diva Farms, and the Heart & Soul of this to share our passion in hopes that you will then share your passion and one by one we can each make a positive impact on someone else’s life. One small step is all it takes, come, lets to do this together ♥

Curried Rice with Cranberries

One of the greatest pleasures for me in cooking is when I can create something with what I have on hand as well as being able to use something grown from our garden. We loved this dish!  I made it today with items I had on hand.

1/2 C dried sweetened cranberries

2 lg garlic cloves minced

2 tbl fresh cilantro chopped

1/2 C+ as needed organic vegetable broth

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

1 tsp Garam Marsala

2 tsp Curry Powder

salt & pepper to taste  * you can adjust all the spices to what you like *

Heat olive oil in a large saute pan on medium heat, add onions, red pepper flakes, almonds, garlic & cranberries.  Heat for 2 minutes, stirring.  Add the vegetable broth, add the spices, mix through.  Add the pre-cooked rice, mix through, add the cilantro, mix and serve…Easy, fast, healthy and delicious!

Tis the season to grow tomatoes fa la la la la

This year our Christmas dining room window decorations are all the baby tomatoes! Every window is filled with different varieties.  We don’t have lots of shelves with special lights for a plant nursery, so our dining room has become the nursery!  Which is great!  I will forgo all the decorations in exchange for mismatched cups and pots to have great organic food growing.  These little ones are doing great in the windows.  It seems I’m learning to grow like I cook, improvising.  What can I do with what I have?  I LOVE THIS!   My creativity is growing too!  My Christmas wish, to be able to turn my entire back yard into a farm!

Merry Christmas!
